The Current and Future State of the Gaming Computers and Monitors Market

In recent years, the demand for gaming computers and PC monitors has been stagnant, but the gaming segment of this market has shown some resilience. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), worldwide shipments of gaming monitors are expected to increase by 10.8% in 2023, while gaming computers are expected to see a decline of 10.5%.

Despite the decrease in sales of gaming computers, this market is expected to contract less compared to the overall PC market. This is because buyers are taking advantage of reduced prices of previous generation products and current devices due to excess inventory. The strategy of offering lower prices has attracted consumers to invest in gaming computers despite the economic crisis.

As for gaming monitors, they have already experienced improvement in the first half of 2023. Manufacturers have focused on this more lucrative segment of the display market, which has translated into better sales performance. Despite adverse macroeconomic conditions that have limited the purchasing power of general consumers and gamers, the gaming monitor market has shown resilience.

Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobile and Consumer Devices, explains that cautious behavior among gamers is leading them to hold onto their current computers for longer or consider purchasing refurbished gaming computers to control costs. This behavior has contributed to the decline in sales of gaming computers, but it has also created an opportunity for the refurbished devices market.

According to Jaya Chou, research manager for IDC’s PC monitors, the gaming monitor market has experienced five consecutive quarters of decline but managed to regain momentum in the second quarter. Chou expects a stronger recovery in this segment due to improved cost structures and further industry concentration. Gaming monitors, which typically cost just over $300, offer an effective way to enhance gaming experiences.

Looking ahead, it is predicted that the gaming computer market will improve in 2024 and beyond, with a projected annual growth rate of 4.6% between 2023 and 2027. Gaming monitors are also expected to experience stable growth during the same period, with an annual growth rate of 7.7%. These numbers indicate positive prospects for the gaming segment in the computer and monitor market.
